The 36th Antigua Classic Regatta was sailed from April 14 through April 19, with 48 yachts and their crews competing across six classes. All boats were moored stern-to in Antigua’s beautiful and historic Nelson’s Dockyard.
Sea conditions were ideal, with 17 knots of easterly wind gusting to 20 knots, along with moderate seas. The regatta opened with a single-handed race on Thursday, followed by four days of outstanding racing.
Today, a cream tea and gig sailing event will be held at Admirals Inn, hosted by Antigua Classic Regatta Chairman Paul Deeth. Mr. Deeth sailed his stunning 50-foot Choy Lee Alden ketch, Petrana, to victory in the Legacy Class and was delighted with the week’s events.
“It was one of the best Antigua Classic Regattas ever, and I’m quite happy with how the week went,” he said.
Among the standout yachts competing were the legendary 1936 ketch Ticonderoga, designed by L. Francis Herreshoff, and the 106-foot ketch Saharet of Tyre, built by Camper & Nicholson in 1933.
Shore-side activities included a concours d’elegance, a best tropical shirt competition, an open mic night, and a boat-building competition.
