Cuban authorities report that on February 25 a Florida-registered speedboat entered Cuban territorial waters off the northern coast near Villa Clara province, reportedly within about one nautical mile of shore. Cuban border forces attempted to intercept the vessel. According to Cuba’s Interior Ministry, individuals aboard the boat opened fire during the encounter, wounding a Cuban officer. Cuban forces returned fire. Four people aboard the speedboat were killed and six injured. The wounded were transported to Cuban hospitals.
