As part of a continuing initiative by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to protect vital ecosystems and water resources, the Royal Basseterre Valley National Park Arboretum was officially handed over to the St. Kitts and Nevis Department of Environment in spring 2026. The ceremony marked the completion of a five-year integrated landscape management project funded by the European Union.
The project focused on sustainable land management through perimeter fencing and afforestation within the national park, which sits in a critical aquifer area supplying fresh water to approximately 40 percent of the St. Kitts population. It will also enhance the ecological, recreational, educational, and cultural value of the protected site through the planting of fruit and ornamental trees.
