For four unforgettable days, St. Maarten was the epicenter of world-class sailing, beachside celebrations, and nonstop action on and off the water. The 45th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, held from March 6-9, 2025, brought together over 35 countries and an incredible mix of professional teams, local legends, and thrill-seeking sailors for a regatta like no other.
From squalls and sun to light breezes and high-speed drama, this year’s regatta had it all. Here’s a blow-by-blow recap of the epic battles on the water and the wild celebrations onshore!
DAY 1: SUN, SQUALLS, AND A ROUND-THE-ISLAND ADVENTURE
The regatta kicked off with one of the most exciting traditions: the Around the Island Race. With fleets launching off from Simpson Bay, sailors were ready for a fast and furious start—until Mother Nature threw in some curveballs.
The 12-knot southerly breeze at the start turned into unpredictable conditions, with sudden squalls creating challenges (and a few choice words from skippers). Big boats in CSA 1 and CSA 2 took an aggressive approach, with Sailing Poland making a bold offshore move while Leaps and Bounds 2 and Sisi played it safe inshore. The gamble paid off for Leaps and Bounds 2, which snatched victory in CSA 1. In CSA 2, DNR established itself as the boat to beat.
Other Highlights:
- The Dead Zone Battle: Near Friar’s Bay, boats sailed into a wind hole and got completely stuck. J-aguar and LA LOEVIE were trapped as competitors slipped past.
- The Melges 24 Showdown: Five boats stayed neck-and-neck the entire race, with Island Water World barely edging out the competition.
- High-Speed Diam 24s: Zeebest was gone in a flash, living up to its name and taking the win.
As the sun set, the Regatta Village came to life with a high-energy opening night concert and the first of many “Serious Fun” afterparties.
DAY 2: LIGHT WINDS, BIG STRATEGIES, AND PHOTO FINISHES
Day 2 started with blue skies, a light breeze, and a whole lot of tactical sailing. With 4-12 knots of wind, racers had to play it smart, making every sail trim and shift count.
The Melges 24 fleet had nail-bitingly close finishes, with three different winners in three races. It was so tight that Island Water World and Budget Marine ended the day dead even in points.
Over in the Diam 24 fleet, it was another perfect day for zeebest, which swept all three races in dominant fashion. Meanwhile, CSA 4 featured a true underdog story—Bella J from Canada, with a crew of young sailors from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, battled hard and held their own against seasoned competitors.
One of the day’s most heartwarming moments came from the Sailability Race, where sailors with disabilities took to the water for their own regatta. As one caregiver put it, “They know they can make a difference. And that’s what this regatta is about.”
As night fell, sailors celebrated under the stars with live music, ice-cold Heinekens, and non-stop dancing at Bikini Beach.
DAY 3: BEACH STADIUM RACING AND EDGE-OF-YOUR-SEAT ACTION
Day 3 saw stronger 10-12 knot winds and some of the most exciting racing yet—especially for the Diam 24 stadium-style racing in Grand Case.
Imagine this: boats flying past just meters from the beach, crowds cheering from Tropics Beach Bar, and photo finishes that left everyone breathless. The MarkSetBot robotic buoy created the closest finish line ever, making every second count.
Top Thrills of the Day:
- Wild Rounding in the Melges 24 Fleet: At the first mark, three boats were just inches apart—chaos ensued, but Island Water World came out on top.
- The CSA2 Rivalry Intensifies: DNR, GEM, and Kinship continued their battle for dominance. GEM took the win today, setting the stage for an epic final day.
- Next Generation Racing: Young sailors from St. Maarten Yacht Club took to the water in bright green RS Zests, proving that the future of sailing is in good hands.
The day wrapped up with International Women’s Day celebrations, highlighting all-female teams like the Salish Sisters from Vancouver and the legendary Heineken Ladies Sailing Team.
And then? It was time for live Caribbean music, dancing, and Heineken-fueled revelry at the Regatta Village.
DAY 4: EPIC FINISHES AND LEGENDARY CELEBRATIONS
The final day was everything you want in a regatta finale:
✔ Delayed start due to light winds? Check.
✔ Course changes for max excitement? Check.
✔ Spectacular racing past Maho Beach as planes landed overhead? Double check!
As the breeze filled in, the competition exploded:
- Pata Negra (CSA 3) and El Ocaso (CSA 5) completed undefeated regattas, showing true dominance.
- In CSA 2, Kinship got its first win, but DNR took the overall title.
- Seaduction finally beat La Novia in Multihull 2, breaking their streak.
- The Bridge Show at Simpson Bay was pure chaos: Costumes, champagne showers, mast-climbing, and even a surprise proposal (she said yes!).
Then came the grand finale—a huge prize-giving ceremony, cheers of victory, and a massive reggae concert featuring The Wailers!
