The 14th edition of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua, held from March 5th to 9th, 2025, was a vibrant celebration of sailing prowess, camaraderie, and island festivities. Set against the stunning backdrop of Antigua’s south coast, this year’s event attracted ten magnificent superyachts, each showcasing exceptional skill and competitive spirit.
Day 1: Sailing Skills & Paddleboard Thrills
The challenge commenced with a 21-nautical-mile race featuring light to moderate southeast winds of 9-13 knots. The course, intricately designed with seven legs, tested the tactical acumen of all participants. In the Buccaneers Class, Don Macpherson’s Swan 90, Freya, clinched victory, narrowly edging out Hummingbird, captained by Josh Hill. The Corsairs Class saw the 121-foot Dykstra sloop, Action, captained by Angus Fuller, dominate the race, while the Privateers Class was led by the 182-foot Dykstra schooner, Adela, under the guidance of Captain Greg Perkins.
Day 2: Super Saturday & Questionable Fashion Choices
The second day offered superb sailing conditions with easterly winds that later veered southeast, increasing to 13 knots. The 18-nautical-mile course presented diverse wind angles, prompting strategic maneuvers. The Buccaneers Class witnessed a thrilling duel between the Swan 90s, with Freya once again emerging victorious, a mere 74 seconds ahead of Hummingbird. Action continued its winning streak in the Corsairs Class, and Adela secured its second consecutive win in the Privateers Class. The day culminated in a lively dockyard party, where sailors showcased their flamboyant fashion sense, adding a splash of color to the evening’s festivities.
Day 3: A Spectacular Finale
The final day featured ideal Caribbean conditions with brisk easterly winds of 15-17 knots over a 21-nautical-mile course. The Buccaneers Class saw Freya complete a hat-trick of victories, solidifying its dominance. Action maintained its impeccable performance in the Corsairs Class, finishing the challenge undefeated. Adela also achieved a perfect record in the Privateers Class, winning all three races. The event concluded with a grand prize-giving ceremony at the Admiral’s Inn, Nelson’s Dockyard, where participants celebrated their achievements and the spirit of the regatta.
