Ripples to Waves, a Vincentian nonprofit, is calling on whale- and dolphin-watchers to be a part of its research team. The organization is inviting all ocean users to contribute to its ongoing research on the whales and dolphins (cetaceans) of St. Vincent and the Grenadines by volunteering a vessel for a day of field surveys or by reporting sightings. “Our goal is to improve understanding of cetacean distribution, seasonal occurrence, habitat use and population trends,” says founder Raven Hofflund.
Here’s what’s needed:
- Photos or videos of the animals
- GPS coordinates of the sighting location
- Date and time of the observation
- Distinctive features such as markings, scars, or color patterns
- The number of animals observed (if possible)
- Observed behavior, including jumping, bow riding, tail slapping, feeding, or social interactions
Here are a few important guidelines for safe and non-intrusive watching:
- If you encounter whales or dolphins, keep a safe distance — at least 100 meters from whales and even farther if calves are present.
- Avoid sudden changes in speed or direction.
- Never chase the animals.
