Magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook large parts of the Eastern Caribbean on Saturday morning

A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook large parts of the Eastern Caribbean on Saturday morning, May 16, with the epicenter located roughly 52 miles northeast of Antigua and Barbuda. Tremors were reportedly felt across a wide swath of the region, including the British Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Kitts & Nevis, Anguilla, Sint Maarten, Montserrat, and beyond. According to the USGS, the quake struck at approximately 10:50 AM local time at a depth estimated between roughly 30–63 km beneath the Atlantic seabed. Authorities reported no tsunami threat and, as of now, no major damage or injuries have been widely confirmed.

The earthquake generated significant discussion across the Caribbean throughout the day, with many residents describing prolonged shaking, swaying buildings, rattling windows, and brief evacuations from homes and offices. Social media reports came in from Antigua, St. Kitts, Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Martinique within minutes of the event. Seismologists note that the Lesser Antilles sits along a highly active tectonic boundary where the North and South American plates interact with the Caribbean Plate — a region historically prone to significant seismic activity.

While this quake appears to have caused minimal impact, it serves as another reminder that the Eastern Caribbean remains one of the more seismically active regions in the Atlantic basin. Experts say aftershocks are possible in the coming days, though most are typically smaller than the main event.
