Celebrating its 44th this year, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta returns and welcomes racers and cruisers alike to join the “Serious Fun!” February 29 – March 3, 2024.
Over 100 boats participated in the 2023 St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, with a fleet that showed enormous diversity – from 24-ft performance trimarans to 70-ft ocean racing monohulls alongside family catamaran cruisers-turned-racers. Due to the “Serious Fun!” factor that the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has become known for, amateur racers up to professional maxi teams come to enjoy 4 days of competitive and dynamic race courses, complemented by world-class entertainment by night.
Island Time Class – Made for Cruisers
“This was our first time doing the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, and we’ll be back because we had a great time! Great competitors, people from everywhere…. We met a lot of friends, we helped some people out, they helped us out. We really just had a great time here in St. Maarten,” said Heidi Herlihy, Skipper of Swan 56 Tramontana. Tramontana competed in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta’s unique Island Time class, which is designed for cruisers or those looking to enjoy the Regatta on ‘island time’ with later starts, one race per day, a simplified CSA rating and shorter courses.
With the CSA ratings for this class adapting each day according to the previous day’s race results, this is a great class for live-aboards, world travelers and even racing yachts who just prefer a more laid-back way to take part in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta.
Hank Schmitt, the originator of the Island Time class concept was full of praise for last year’s event. “Race committee boat B, the race organization staff and volunteers made exceeding our expectations easy. Our yacht, Avocation, with paying crew aboard, always strives to exceed expectations for her clients. We will be back for our number 19th regatta [this] year,” he said.
Looking to the future, Hank hopes that more yachts will join the Island Time Class. As a spokesperson and avid promoter of sailing to and around the Caribbean through the NARC Rally, Hank has made tremendous efforts to bring more boats to the region and sail in Caribbean events. At the final prize-giving in 2023, Hank was recognized by the Regatta Organizers and awarded the Robbie Ferron Trophy for Promoter of Sailing in the Caribbean.
Fun for Everyone!
There are many special trophies and daily prizes, which provide for a Serious Fun opportunity for any team to win! The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has previously awarded special trophies for women, youth, and the teams with the most Regatta spirit. The daily Bridge Show’s parade of sail through the iconic Simpson Bay Bridge is a final shot of the day to win some points and pride from the adoring Regatta fans at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club.
Teams don their best costumes and bust out the dance moves in front of a panel of judges and a roaring crowd – who have front row seats to the Show! Head on over to the Sint Maarten Yacht Club for a late lunch, or early happy hour, between 2-3 PM to see the daily Bridge Show during the Regatta. Be sure to get there early, grab a cold Heineken, and claim your best spot on the club deck to see the Show.
There are plenty more free entertainment opportunities during Regatta week, including the Regatta Village at Port de Plaisance, which is open to the public daily February 29 – March 3, 2024. Head to the main bar to catch apres-sail libations with the race teams, hearing salty sailing stories from the race course. Enjoy the daily prizegiving festivities that kick off an evening of entertainment, featuring local and international musical acts. The Regatta Village is also filled with local food and vendors to serve as your one-stop-spot for “Serious Fun!” throughout the event.
Get in on the Action
For those looking to get a closer look at the racing action on the water, there are plenty of spots to see from shore at one of the “Regatta Ready” waterside venues around the island. Book lunch at one of these top viewpoints, and enjoy yacht-spotting paired with delectable cuisine and cocktails. For the ultimate view, head to Elev8 – the literal TOP venue of St. Maarten, atop Sentry Hill – for a panoramic look at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta on Saturday, March 2.
While a birds eye view is incredible, nothing beats the thrill of witnessing the Regatta from the official Spectator Boat. The VIP spectator experiences on Saturday & Sunday include breakfast, lunch, and an open bar, plus crew from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club to provide live commentary of the race course action. Experience the rush of the start line where massive yachts go closer than you would ever imagine to squeeze out the best start, and ultimately win!
Another exciting way to experience the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is to join the legendary volunteer team. The Regatta’s volunteer crew make the Regatta magic, and are at work behind the scenes in hospitality, race committee, operations and entertainment to ensure everyone has “Serious Fun!” All are welcome to join as volunteers, and only a “Serious Fun” attitude is required!
