Oranjestad - St Eustatius The stone structure of Fort de Windt was completed in 1756 and used to monitor shipping routes before it was abandoned in 1815. It retains a pair of forest-green-painted cannons on top of the wall. Maybe with luck you will see a Whale passing bay through the bay

The July 2025 issue of Caribbean Compass sails through a vibrant mix of Caribbean life — from heartfelt reflections on the fading camaraderie among cruisers in the digital age, to a rum-soaked roundup of beloved beach bars across the islands . It marks one year since Hurricane Beryl, spotlighting the resilience of communities like Carriacou and Union Island as they rebuild. Plus, new initiatives like telehealth for cruising pets and a regional photo contest champion both connection and conservation. This edition is a reminder that even as the seas change, the spirit of Caribbean sailing lives on strong.

In this issue’s Island Spotlight, St. Eustatius — or Statia — shines as a quiet gem in the Northern Leewards. Nestled between Saba and St. Kitts, Statia offers a dramatic mix of natural beauty and rich history: from its volcanic peak, The Quill, to centuries-old stone ruins that tumble into the sea. The anchorage gives a postcard view of Oranjestad atop the cliffs, while ashore, goats graze peacefully and little disturbs the island’s tranquil vibe . Though small, Statia’s past looms large — once a major trading port known as “The Golden Rock,” it played a pivotal role in Caribbean colonial history .

The Virgin Islands Professional Charter Association (VIPCA) is pushing back against increased fees imposed by the British Virgin Islands on U.S. Virgin Islands-based charter vessels. They’re calling for reciprocal charges on BVI boats entering USVI waters to protect local jobs and the $166M charter industry vital to the USVI economy . VIPCA warns that without action, the BVI’s policies could drive business away and urges measures like credential enforcement, customs tracking, and stricter safety compliance for foreign vessels. They advocate for a unified Virgin Islands sailing zone — but say the BVI’s current stance threatens regional cooperation.

The article on Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina spotlights the BVI retreat’s blend of luxury, island heritage, and renewed energy. A major highlight is the revitalization of nearby Marina Cay, once home to author Robb White and now reborn with a breezy bar & grill, water sports, and laid-back charm. Scrub Island itself offers upscale villas, private beaches, fine and casual dining, a full-service marina, and curated experiences — from spa days to sunset cocktails. With new packages like Private Island Bliss, the resort invites guests to rediscover the magic of secluded Caribbean escapes in style.
