Samaná, Dominican Republic — Sailors from across the Dominican Republic and beyond gathered in the protected waters of Samaná Bay for the inaugural Bannister’s Cup Regatta, a new sailing event that highlighted the bay’s growing reputation as one of the Caribbean’s emerging cruising and racing destinations.
Held as part of Marina Weekend 2026 and hosted at Marina Puerto Bahía, the June 25-28 regatta brought together monohull and multihull competitors for a weekend of racing, camaraderie, and shoreside festivities. The event was endorsed by ADVELCO and attracted captains and crews eager to experience the scenic waters of Samaná Bay, home to attractions including Cayo Levantado and Los Haitises National Park.
Top honors went to Lady M, captained by Joan Rodríguez, in Class A; Xommos, captained by Jorge Abréu Abud, in Class B; and La Novia, skippered by George Coutú, in the Multihull division.
While competition was at the heart of the weekend, the event also fostered a strong sense of community among participants. Sailors gathered ashore following racing to celebrate the sport and connect with fellow cruisers and racers, underscoring the collaborative spirit that has long defined Caribbean sailing.
The regatta formed part of the broader Puerto Bahía Marina Weekend, a four-day celebration that also featured the Puerto Bahía Open Fishing Tournament, waterfront social events, and a closing performance by Spanish musical duo A Dos Velas.
Situated in the protected waters of Samaná Bay, Marina Puerto Bahía is a full-service marina accommodating yachts up to 150 feet, with customs and immigration clearance, fuel, security, and other shoreside amenities.
Organizers hope the Bannister’s Cup will become an annual fixture on the regional sailing calendar, further showcasing Samaná Bay as an appealing destination for both competitive sailors and cruising yachts visiting the Caribbean.
The inaugural event was supported by the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism, Grupo Propagás, Bancalari Corredores de Seguros, Banco BDI, and a wide range of regional sponsors and marine industry partners.
