How do they know? There is some perverse trait of boat systems belonging to a liveaboard cruiser. That trait is the uncanny ability for our systems to select some remote island location to fail - a location where assistance is very limited.
Is it just fantasy to think that competent help for the specific product could become available, wherever you are in the world? It seems that virtually every island now has an internet café. In addition, more and more cruisers are moving to e-mail via SSB radio. We recently received a one-day response from Raymarine concerning troubleshooting a failure in our Autohelm instruments and, in another situation, a response from Flo-jet concerning a source for a specific pump.

Below is a table that contains approximately 300 companies who supply systems, parts, and/or services to the cruising community. The sources for this table are many, primarily a direct-mail campaign that we did and which had excellent responses from manufacturers who are anxious to support their users. We also did a booth-by booth canvassing of the Newport Boat Show, and added our own resources, and information from other cruisers.

Despite all of the checking that we did, the table undoubtedly contains some errors and omissions. If you have suggestions, corrections, or additions please e-mail them to us at [email protected] and we will amend the table for future publication.
