It’s May, and Caribbean Compass reaches across the islands for a farewell to high season — race yachts depart St. Barts, headed to Newport, Rhode Island, on a new course; community voices in Belize shape conservation; two authors share their perspective on sailboat chartering today vs. decades ago.

More May highlights: A global study reveals how pollution is quietly undermining even protected marine sanctuaries. Sam Peterson, the beloved bridge operator of St. Maarten, emerges as an unsung guardian of maritime rhythm and community. A thoughtful review of Wake of the Whale explores hunting societies in the islands and in the North Atlantic

Savor this May moment, when the Caribbean begins its seasonal shift: passages lengthen, plans turn north and east, and the stories left in the wake of another winter afloat are worth holding onto.

Island Spotlight – Anguilla shines as a laid-back gem known for powdery white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water, and an impressive dining scene. Beyond its luxury reputation, the island offers a welcoming charm, excellent cruising access, and a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere that keeps visitors coming back

Cruisers, racers, and spectators — the 57th Antigua Sailing Week has something for everyone. With this year’s revised format sending competing and cruising yacht classes, beach party goers, and sightseers on a four-day counterclockwise beat out of English Harbour around the island, everyone comes away with a prize — whether it’s a racing trophy or a selfie on an Instagram feed.

The 1970s marked a turning point for Caribbean yachting, as pioneering charter companies and growing marina infrastructure made island cruising more accessible than ever. Many of today’s charter models, cruising routes, and sailing culture were shaped during this boom era.

This month, we profile Sam Peterson, the longtime operator of the Simpson Bay Bridge in St. Maarten, whose steady hand and deep maritime roots have guided vessels safely for years. More than a bridge tender, Peterson is celebrated as a beloved community figure whose humor, craftsmanship, and support for local sailing have made him a true island icon.

Hunter Societies in the Caribbean and North Atlantic, a fascinating look at the communities built around whaling, sealing, and maritime hunting across the Atlantic world. The book offers fresh insight into how these industries shaped island economies, cultures, and connections between the Caribbean and northern waters.

Dominica is inviting hikers, outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers to explore the island’s most secluded landscapes in May as the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association (DHTA) launches HikeFest 2026, “Beyond the Beaten Path.”
